Done with the Duct Tape

We could live with the crushed ice cube buttons, the many missing shelves, the remaining duct taped one.......

the door that no longer shut by itself and even the water button, that when pushed, created a mini waterfall down the front of the fridge. When the door no longer remained closed, however, we had to give in and buy a new appliance. Although I hated to spend the money, I'll gladly admit how nice it is not to look at hunter orange and camouflage duct tape each time I want a drink of orange juice.

Matinee

It's not often that the whole family gets to enjoy the movie theatre experience together, but today was one of those times. Jim and I packed our kids and the Foreman kids into our two trucks and went to see Ice Age: Continental Drift.

The place was so crowded that the only space available was at the very front, which is not the most comfortable viewing position. Atira and Riley opted to find a couple spare seats further back but the rest of us stayed put and settled in for a fun movie. We were not disappointed.

Up And Down 295 A Few Times

Lots of travel in the car this week...Wednesday it was down to Crescent Beach in Cape Elizabeth to meet Heather, Annah, and Alyssa. I didn't realize that my cousin Jessie would be there also. It was a pleasant surprise when she arrived on the scene, kids in tow. Some of you will not be shocked that she didn't look for us very long but was tipped off to our location by hearing my laugh a half a beach away......later that day, after depositing Atira and Tell back home to Jubal, I headed back down 295 to meet Annah, Alyssa, Nicki and Heather at Oasis Nail Salon on Forest Ave. in Portland.

In honor of Annah Brunk, the baby of the Buxton Crowd, turning 30, we all indulged in a relaxing pedicure and then headed to Applebee's where we finished out the night. Upon leaving, cashless Nicki had to use her debit card to pay for one single cup of coffee and then during our parking lot conversation revealed that she uses the perpetual bird poop on her car (from parking under a nest) to verify her car's identity in a large parking lot. I'm sure the rest of you don't find that particularly interesting but I wanted to remember that Nicki Redlon actually said such a thing......

Thursday it was back down to Portland again, this time to Dr. Zappia's dental office for cleanings. We discovered Tell chipped one of his baby molars but other than that, a good report for all.

Friday, I picked up Nolan from teen camp at Camp Good News and ran into Chris McCarthy and His Bike....(there's never one without the other at CGN) Another nice surprise was Sue Batty's smiling face. You always run into someone that you know up there, it's just a matter of who....

I had no travel plans for today but Aunt Suci showed up at the house and changed that. We went to the gym, picked up some Subway sandwiches, made a fruitless trip to her storage unit and finally arrived at her apartment for lunch and coffee.

Can I just say that I have no plans to go anywhere next week?!

The Snakes Crawl at Night

(an unpublished addendum to my April AT posts that I just discovered)

We tented close to Fingerboard Shelter last night after an exhausting day of hiking. Once in the tent I told Peg, "I will be asleep before you finish dressing." This morning she confirmed that my snoring began pretty much the minute my head hit the pillow. Inevitably I awoke before dawn needing to use the"Poo Loo". At the same time I recalled that the Fingerboard Shelter had a resident rattlesnake.

I also remembered one of my favorite childhood memories....my Grandpa Dan, in his yodeling, country twang voice, frequently sang "Oh the snakes crawl at night. That's what they say. When the sun goes down, then the snakes will play." So at 4 in the morning I was googling whether this song was accurate. I decided to hold it until daylight.

From Flowergirl to Bride

Eighteen years ago Tiffani Romano walked down the aisle as the flowergirl at my wedding in Eastport, Maine...

and yesterday, at Broadturn Farm in Scarborough, Maine, she walked down the aisle as the bride.

The farm was a beautifully casual setting, with fields of wildflowers, a beehive and the prettiest outhouse I've ever encountered. My AT tent mates, Liz and Peg would have appreciated the elegance of this building for sure. It put our "pee shanty" and "poo loo" to shame.

To complete the rustic feel there was an outdoor sink. It was adorned with a bouquet which attracted a honeybee who decided to get a sip of water at the tap. Although it made an interesting picture, I could have done without the bee hanging around.

Tiffani and Mark held the ceremony in a beautiful small barn filled with white folding chairs, rustic beams, a wide wood plank floor and spiders, one of which attempted to crawl up the back of Tiffani's dress during the ceremony. It was my uncle John, formerly of NCIS and the Secret Service, to the rescue. He confidently rose from his seat in the third row, briskly strode to the bride, dispatched the spider with one swipe and a stomp and the wedding continued on smoothly. The reception was held just outside the barn under a white canopy at the end of a gorgeous summer day with handmade decorations, made in large part by Tiffani's sister-in-law, Meghan. There were tacos for supper and in lieu of cake, there was an assortment of gelato from The Gelato Fiasco in Brunswick. While in line for the tacos, Tell disappeared. Unknown to me, he had been eyeing one of the storebought smooth river rocks that was placed on the pile of napkins. He returned with a rock of comparable size from the driveway and quickly swapped the two, saying "I really like thith rock. I'm gonna bring it home so I I had to get one to replathe it."

Of course the nicest part of the wedding was spending time with the family that came.

Although she was exhausted and in recovery mode today, I know Aunt Suci enjoyed this special day with her family.

I made a promise to Annah that I would only post good photos of her so I was left with only this one of her hand. Sorry, Annah. On a side note about Annah, at one point several of us were engaged in a discussion about my Aunt Cheryl's tattoo and Annah proceeded to inform us that she had given some serious thought to the "what"and "where" of a tattoo. She would have the words "I love you this much" with some type of measuring line placed on her backside. That way, as she got older and her backside got bigger, the "I love you" line would just get wider. Thank you, Annah for one of my heartiest laughs of the evening.

As the sun made its way toward the horizon, Tell asked me to go with him to where the music was, so I ended the evening dancing in the barn with Atira, Aunt Cheryl and Uncle Frank. Tell joined us on the dance floor but only stood, looking at everyone else. I found out later that as he was playing outside the barn earlier, he had been asked by a little girl to come inside and dance. He brushed her off in typical Tell fashion, "No, I don't think so....I'm not much of a dancer person." Well, I'm not much of a dancer either, but it sure was a fun way to end a very nice day!
Congratulations
Tiffani and Mark Furrow!

Cruisin'

While Jim headed north to bring Jubal back from working Week 1 of Camp Good News, Suci and I hopped in her vehicle and headed south to meet up with the Buxton crowd at Panera. I drove and once we hit 295, I wanted to engage the cruise control. I expected that the owner of the vehicle might know which buttons to push. It turns out I was wrong. Suci doesn't like cruise control and had no idea how it worked so out came the owner's manual for some study. After eight years of SUV ownership Suci learned something new and I happily cruised the rest of the way to Westbrook for our girl's night out.

Crescent Beach-Full Moon

It's once again beach season in the state of Maine......drive to Cape Elizabeth, kids and beach toys in tow...arrive late and bump into Annah, the Buxton Crowd's other consistently late-arriver, near the bathrooms....plant your beach chair next to Heather's only to move a half hour later because of the incoming tide....catch up on the latest happenings while snacking on refreshingly cool grapes that Aunt Suci froze for us the night before....dig your toes into the burning sand and then shock them into numbness as you wade into the Atlantic....come home without a sunburn.....watch a full moon rise.....and call it a good day.
